About Us

Who we areLocated in the beautiful foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Albany, Ohio, Wellspring is the world’s only fully accredited residential counseling center specializing in the treatment of individuals who have suffered in abusive religious groups, organizations, and cults. Our program is also especially effective for those who have been in coercive relationships as well as those who have experienced professional abuse and/or sexual exploitation from therapists, doctors, clergy, and teachers. We are best known for our intensive two-week, residential program of counseling, education, and care. Our clients stay in our chalet-style Lodge and enjoy a safe and relaxed atmosphere that is created by our caring staff. We are fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and, further, our counselors are trained mental health professionals.

While the residential program is the foundation of our reputation, we also offer expert help to families of abuse victims, and we speak at conferences, schools, churches and other organizations around the globe.

Wellspring as a resourceIn addition to the treatment services we offer, Wellspring is a resource and research center.

We work in conjunction with major universities around the world to better understand the cultic phenomenon of thought reform, also known as coercive persuasion or mind control. Our staff members have authored books and produced numerous published articles about the trauma associated with coercion and its treatment. Further, we are source to many media outlets including CBS 48 Hours, NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, Femme Actual (France), the Japanese edition of Newsweek, The Montel Williams Show, The Chicago Tribune, Time Magazine and many, many others. Also, our internship program has a prestigious international reputation.
